It was an abusive racist joke. I have no sympathy for those that laugh and frankly no patience for those that try to intellectualize racist comedy and excuse the Coens. I was aware of Trees Lounge when it came out (99% sure I read a positive review in Entertainment Weekly) but it wasn't going to play anywhere near my rural location and when it came out on VHS for some reason I always passed on it. It's a shame, because it was a really interesting character study and exactly the kind of movie I was into at that time. That being said, watching it in my late 40s I can probably appreciate it even more. I know some people like this.

I'm glad this movie exists and I'm glad this review exists. Not only is it a cheap kill, but since we know none of the main characters are in danger (ever), it struck me as particularly cruel to kill off such a minor character in such a prolonged manner. It's not like there's even enough development of the character for it to really register if it was intended to shock you into thinking nobody is safe. There isn't too much online about the short because it's just starting its festival run (it's playing at the Atlanta Film Festival at the end of March and the Florida Film Festival in April). Also it's title for the ABCs contest was "M is for Mourning." There's a small review for it here: http://www.undergroundfilmjournal.com/short-horror-film-m-is-for-mourning/ and here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/64947

Sorry if you felt cheated at the end. Most of the audience seemed a little confused, but its relation to The ABCs of Death 2 makes a lot more sense. (There was a similar reaction to the length of the credits vs. the length of "M is for Mime," which came to be under similar circumstances) I had a difficult time finding anything when searching for the short on Google, so the review / recap was based largely on the immediate reaction as the lights came up. It's a world that certainly would be welcome to explore more of if you ever have the opportunity.

Cheers,
Cap'mCap'n Howdyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00529887150492149266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4713972189482444062.post-70751364189233548682014-02-28T23:58:57.461-05:002014-02-28T23:58:57.461-05:00Hi Cap'n. Thanks for the review of my film &q...Hi Cap'n. Thanks for the review of my film "Welcome to Dignity Pastures." The reality of why the film is so short is that it was originally an entry in the ABCs of Death 2 contest. The rule was to make a short in 3 minutes or less. So that is why the short was, well short. I do enjoy getting in, getting my point across and then getting out before I overstay my welcome. In a typical short block, there's always a mixed bunch and some tend to overstay their welcome. I am grateful that festivals program my work so I always aim to make something that has an interesting idea and get out with hopes to at least get a chuckle from the audience. I have made shorts that are only a minute that have screened at festivals. The truth is I have a lot of ideas and necessarily the time nor the money to fully flesh them out. So I consider these shorts I make to be a quick scribble with hopes to return and develop it into something bigger. I have a few shorts I made that I hope to elaborate in the future. But for now I am scribbling more ideas down for future shorts. Anyway thanks again for reviewing the short and the other shorts. It was a good block of work. My favorite was Rope a Dope.

Best,
BrianUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16132454273917176651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4713972189482444062.post-18442865571590315172014-02-24T20:46:03.759-05:002014-02-24T20:46:03.759-05:00If anybody is still wondering if that is Paul Rudd...If anybody is still wondering if that is Paul Rudd, I apologize for not making it totally clear, but it is NOT Paul Rudd. Rudd's filmography on IMDB doesn't start until five years after Adventures in Babysitting was released, and while he was 18 in 1987, the actor who plays "The Rudd" is George Newbern. And yes, you can do a Google image search and find a page called 'Paul Rudd totally looks like George Newbern," because I just saw it.

I hope that helps clarify things, and I'm glad so many people are enjoying Adventures in Babysitting, because that movie is the bees knees.Cap'n Howdyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00529887150492149266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4713972189482444062.post-56192662589740851072014-01-24T22:06:17.085-05:002014-01-24T22:06:17.085-05:00Thanks, by the way, for weighing in.
