Greeting, visitor. You have arrived at the digital depository once known as "Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium."
Rather than have the first post be a preamble for a "worst of 2015" series I never finished, I thought this would be a better landing page. As you'll see with the next post, I stopped regularly using this space in October of 2015, and even then, it was pretty much reheated reviews from Shocktober's past. It's for the best: I really haven't had much interest in long-form reviews in a very long time. That said, I'll leave the old ones up for you to peruse*.
Do I still stand by these old reviews?
I don't know. Maybe? I haven't read them in years, and I'm a different person now than when I was regularly churning them out 10-15 years ago. Some of it could use revisiting, and certainly most of it would benefit from a serious copy editor, but to be honest with you, neither of those things are likely to happen. Likewise, I don't monitor comments that are submitted, so if you want to relitigate points I made about movies by the Coen brothers fifteen years ago, be my guest, but I'm not going to engage. I'm going to leave the posts up, but I don't really have strong opinions about where Anton Chigurh was hiding anymore or about the championship ring in The Mechanic. It was, as they say, a different time.
So, what has the Cap'n been up to over the last decade? Well, I still host Fests, four a year without fail (Bad Movie Night, Summer Fest, Horror Fest, and Merry Mayhem). Sometimes I'll throw in a Trappening Fest, which is when only I know the movies in advance. The Alamo Drafthouse does something similar that I can never get tickets for in time, but I doubt they showed a Francis the Talking Mule movie after The Human Tornado.
The Fests don't run as long as they used to because we're not in our twenties anymore and most people like to sleep in their own beds. The compromise is that I start earlier, and folks can leave around midnight. Also, there's less terrible alcohol. This year's Bad Movie Night was a rough one, and I don't think most people have forgiven me for Megalopolis yet. I intend to make up for it next month as Summer Fest**.
Hopefully you find something interesting or fun in these posts. I did try to find random movies or topics that were off the beaten path here and there.
I still keep lists of everything I watch, and I'll close out with the top 10 of every year since I stopped posting. But only the top ten - let's keep things positive. There's enough negativity out there these days.
(these are, if I'm being honest, not in any particular order 1-10.)
2015:
Ex Machina
It Follows
Spring
Turbo Kid
Crimson Peak
What We Do In the Shadows
The Hateful Eight
* I did remove most of the Trailer Sunday and Video Daily Double posts due to the vagaries of YouTube, so there's probably less filler / broken links.
** If you want to know what I've shown in the past (or what's on tap for next month), the oldest post in the Blogorium is a list. It's about the only thing I update.
