Official Announcement: The Greensboro Summerfest Massacre Part 3

editor's note: sorry if you were waiting with baited breath for The Informant! or Iron Man 2 reviews; you'll be getting those after Hamlet week has concluded. In the mean time, read this fun announcement!

Greetings, readers! The time has come for the final (and this time I do mean final) weekend of Horror and Horror-related festivities:

The Greensboro Summerfest Massacre Part 3

Yes kiddos, after this Summerfest the Cap'n will be packing up and moving out west, so if you've wanted in on the experience, this will be YOUR LAST CHANCE to do it in North Carolina (possibly the east coast... who knows?!).

For readers new to the blog: twice a year (once in July and once in October), I gather all the maniacs from the Triad, Triangle, and all adjoining areas to settle in for one solid weekend celebrating all things horror. From dusk until dawn we watch the infamous, the obscure, the tantalizing, the stomach churning, and the hilarious (bad or otherwise) until we can no longer stay awake. Then it's off to bed in order to start over the following night.

As a record of our events I keep readers updated between movies with mini-reviews, and frequently lure otherwise sensible people to write "guest blogger" comments on films they've been subjected to. If you're looking to catch up on the madness, here are all of the Horror Fest posts, and here are the Summerfest posts.

Summerfest is devoted to the Horror-Comedy subgenre, in keeping with the sunnier, livelier seasonal atmosphere. As it is the season of Summer Camps and cookouts, one can expect films that reflect that to some degree, but the Cap'n likes to cast a wide net and find movies that will surprise, shock, or occasionally render attendees speechless.

Previous Summerfests have included films like:

Terrorvision
Chopping Mall
Drag Me to Hell

Plan 9 from Outer Space

The Prowler

Teeth

Friday the 13th Parts 2 and 3 (in 3-D!!!)
Shark Attack 3: Megalodon
Blood Car

The Happening
C.H.U.D.

Night of the Lepus
The Giant Claw
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus
Hillbillys in a Haunted House

and, of course

Troll 2

This year promises to be full of surprises, new and old favorites, and at least three movies we've never watched during either a Summer or Horror Fest (but should have). At the moment, I've been looking at The Navy vs. The Night Monsters, The Gate, Basket Case, Cheerleader Camp, Bad Taste, The Toxic Avenger, The Stuff, and Ghostbusters*. If you have suggestions, the Cap'n would love to hear them, as I'll be scouring the markdown bins (also known as the internet) for the obscure and the ridiculous in the next three weeks.

Ah, yes! That reminds me; I haven't told you WHEN The Greensboro Summerfest Massacre Part 3 is!

July 1st (Thursday) - July 4th (Sunday). We'll be starting Thursday night (preferably with a "Field Trip" selection, if there's something playing that fits criteria) and ending some time Sunday morning. On Friday afternoon I'm hoping to have some variety of cookout (chainsaws are welcome to help cut) and then give poor saps brave visitors a tour of the haunted attic (also known as The Black Lodge) before settling in for the film activities proper.

Some lodging can be provided if needed, but I'll be in the process of moving so there may be more floor space than furnishings for you to nap on. Just a head's up.

If you can make it, you are of course welcome. The Cap'n enjoys when any and all can come and have a blast. This will be the last one in this state / region of the U.S. for at least two years (probably much more), so I want to have as much fun as possible. Join us!!!!

* Yes, it's true. We've never watched Ghostbusters at a Summerfest. We did watch Army of Darkness and Shaun of the Dead last year though.
