Getting back to my cries of "Nooooooooooooooo!", the remake train has gone way off the tracks, as now some company called Spitfire Pictures is remaking Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. If this sounds vaguely familiar, that's because it's going to be playing during Summerfest in July.
It's not simply that this is such a random film to remake, or even that there isn't some kind of market for kung-fu / horror mashups; my concern is that Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires was a product of a unique pairing of studios, Hammer and Shaw Brothers. At the time, both were tops in their respective genres and Vampires, while goofy, is exactly what you'd expect from a Shaw / Hammer co-production: chop sockey and Peter Cushing.
The film even features the following quote: "In Europe, the vampire fears the cross. Here, it will be the image of the Lord Buddha."
Or something like that. Strangely, I can't find the quote online, but I have an audio file of it somewhere. Sure, Christopher Lee doesn't play Dracula, but otherwise it's gangbusters. Or cheese-tacular. I don't see a good future for this remake, to be honest with you.
