Since My Bloody Valentine 3-D left us with a bad taste in our mouths, after some of the gang took a smoke break, we decided to watch Army of Darkness in High Definition, continuing on our Sam Raimi fix.
One thing I noticed this time that I've never really mentioned before is how strange it is that Drag Me to Hell is a PG-13 and Army of Darkness is an R. There is nothing in Army of Darkness now (or possibly in 1993) that gives me cause to think it deserves an R rating. The violence is largely comical, the blood is (fountain aside) surprisingly limited, and Ash's foul mouth only drops one F bomb.
Meanwhile, Drag Me to Hell defiles corpses, kills children, a kitten, and seriously abuses Alison Lohman with any number of horrible bodily fluids. The language is comparatively tame and the tone is much darker. Yet this is the one with the PG-13 rating. Weird.
If you were wondering, Army of Darkness looks impressive in 1080p, with better detail than I've ever seen in any iteration the Cap'n has watched. It can get a little shaky in night time shots, but you can actually make out the details of Evil Ash's makeup and the practical effects all look pretty damn good considering how HD can expose the mechanics. Good times.
As Adam described the movie, it's like "If you made a Three Stooges movie that was just about Moe, this would be it." That's a pretty fair way to leave you with Army of Darkness.
